Ademetionine Butanedisulfonate(SAM)

Ademetionine, the principal active component of Ademetionine Butanedisulfonate, is a physiologically active molecule present in all tissues and body fluids of the human body. It participates in biochemical reactions in vivo as a methyl donor (transmethylation) and as a precursor of physiological thiol compounds, such as cysteine, taurine, glutathione and coenzyme A (transsulfuration). In the liver, it regulates the fluidity of the hepatocyte membrane through methylation of membrane phospholipids, and via transsulfuration reactions it promotes the synthesis of sulfur-containing products involved in the detoxification process, reduces the levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and bilirubin, thereby achieving hepatoprotection. As an important methyl donor in vivo, ademetionine also exerts transsulfuration and aminopropylation activities. It is converted to cysteine in the body and, through further metabolism, produces glutathione, coenzyme A and taurine-like substances. Through its involvement in the Na+/K+-ATPase-mediated bioenergetic reactions of tissue cells, it substantially promotes the biosynthesis of phospholipids in endothelial cells, thereby stabilizing endothelial cell structure and improving endothelial cell function. Meanwhile, glutathione, a metabolite of ademetionine, enhances the detoxifying capacity of the liver. Ademetionine Butanedisulfonate can alleviate hepatic fibrosis, enhance immune function, and is used in the treatment of various types of hepatitis.
